Die Koordinaten werden als Metadaten zur betreffenden Information abgelegt. So erweitert man die Metadaten um eine geografische Komponente und kann die Information mit eindeutigen Koordinaten versehen.

Praktische Anwendungen

Ein Beispiel: Bilder georeferenzieren

Bilder mit Koordinaten zu versehen ist aufgrund der EXIF-Spezifikation nicht schwer. Sie sieht schon Datenfelder für die Angabe von Koordinaten und Kartendatum vor. Damit ist es möglich diese Information fest mit einem Bild zu verknüpfen. Mit entsprechender Software kann diese Information wieder ausgelesen und verwendet werden.

Geotagging Flickr

Der wohl am schnellsten wachsende Benutzerkreis in Sachen geotagging ist beim Kommerziellen Anbieter Flickr zu finden. Dort werden schon seit längerer Zeit Bilder mit Koordinaten versehen. Über diverse Erweiterungen lassen sich die Bilder dann z.B. in Google über die beiden Dienst Maps und Earth betrachten. Ein zentraler nicht kommerzieller Dienst zum Sammeln und darstellen von Koordinaten aus Flickr-Bildern stellt die Seite Geobloggers.com dar.

Blogwise und geourl

Das Blogverzeichnis Blogwise erlaubt schon länger das Verwenden einer sogenannten geourl. Damit ist es möglich einen Blog in einem bestimmten Umkreis zu suchen und auf einer Landkarte darzustellen. Bei dem Dienst geourl handelt es sich um die möglichkeit eine HTML-Seite, unter Zuhilfenahme von Metatags zu georeferenzieren.
